Final Score: - West Derby 3-2 Cardinal Heenan (AET)
First Half
The match started at a frantic pace, West Derby shown great energy levels to press and close down the opposition, Cardinal Heenan struggled to keep the ball and this created our opportunities. We took the lead through Kris Owens a fantastic 18 yard shot, which looped just under the crossbar. Second goal, came from an excellent cross-field pass by Kris Owens into space in front of George Burke. George dribbled the ball forwards then made an excellent strike on the edge of the box straight into the top corner.
Second Half
Second half was always going to be a tough period, against the wind, Cardinal Heenan put us under a lot of pressure and we defending with great determination. However, a goal came from a straight free kick to the back post and the centre back made a good header into the net. This made the score 2-1. Just when it started to look like we were going to hold out for the victory, an unlikely defensive mistake gifted Cardinal Heenan an equaliser 2-2
Extra-Time
Extra time came at a good time for West Derby, opportunity to re-group. We came out 1st half of extra time playing like we did in the 1st half; first chance fell to Aaron Clark 1 on 1 with the keeper and nearly scored the winner. 2nd period of extra time seen West Derby again create the better chances, 2 chances fell to striker George Burke, who was again very unlucky with good saves by the keeper. The winning goal came from Charlie Doyle dribbling the ball past 2 opponents, driving the ball towards the opposition’s goal, when he was fouled outside the right hand side of the 18 yard box. Free kick specialist Kris Owens didn’t disappoint an excellent free kick flew past the Cardinal Heenan keeper. This made the score 3-2 and West Derby managed to see out the last 4mins of the period. A fantastic team performance and an even better season well done.
