Student Council – What Is It?

This is the pupil’s chance for their ‘voice’ to be heard.  Each form throughout years 7 to 11 will elect a representative.  They are then responsible for voicing any new ideas or concerns that the boys in their form class may have.

How Does this Happen?

Each half term a meeting is called where all the Student Council Reps meet to discuss what their peers are suggesting to them.  Typical topics to be discussed during meetings include:

Catering

Facilities

Lunch clubs / After hours clubs

General school life.

All meetings are held in the W9 (6th Form work area on the 1st floor) from 3pm until 4pm.

Why Should I Be A Rep?

Not only is it fulfilling when you see a suggestion made by Student Council be implemented into school, but it is a very exclusive statement to be recorded on your Record of Achievement file.  It shows future employers / colleges / universities that you are a mature, responsible young person who is regarded by others as someone who can represent them.

What Is Expected Of Me?

A student council rep has to attend the meetings they are invited to (the meeting dates are at the bottom of this document) if you are unable to commit to these meetings please do not run for council.  Being late for form time is unacceptable as you are denying the rest of your class from having their voice heard.  Therefore, when voting for a rep your class will want someone who is prepared to turn up to meetings and be mature enough to discuss issues that are important to you.

There are opportunities to get involved in meeting visitors to the school.  Special guest speakers attend our meetings, in the past this has included local councilors, the Lord Mayor, the leader of the City Council, representatives from Merseytravel and our local MP (Stephen Twigg) to name a few.

Last year when our school was inspected by Ofsted the inspectors requested a meeting with the student council which played a part in helping them decide how well our school was doing.  Student council has also played a big part in helping the school achieve Healthy School status and they are still active in the development of our new school.
